Thoughts on Open Source—Part 1

I thought I would post a few blogs around our experience with open source. As you are likely aware, we launched open source in September 2008. Although many of us were very familiar with the open source model, I for one certainly noticed some differences between my expectation and reality. So that’s where I would like to focus.

Infobright implements a completely innovative approach to solving the problem of analytical analysis of large volumes of data. A quick survey of the major open source projects and you wonder if open source is really for innovative projects. Most of these open source offerings are implementation of software applications that have existed for years, like Linux, an operating systems, etc. I’m not trying to imply that there is no innovation in these products but probably not on the same scale as Infobright.

So I wondered about how such an innovative project would be received. I would have to say quite well. The biggest problem with product innovations is convincing people that they actually work. With open source, you can just download and try it. What better proof is there than that.
